Breaking 3 Self-Limiting Beliefs that stop us big time from making a change

We have all often heard that change depends on us.  Way too often… It almost sounds like a cliche. Especially if you are told so by somebody who does not know the complete picture of your story or the difficult time you have to figure out how to change. However, there is an element of truth in the statement: change does depend on us. The tricky part is to decide to change whatever we want. If you choose to change something, everything becomes possible; if you put your mind to it,  you find the way to get it done. The point is to put your mind to it. So, let me help you do so by immediately breaking away from 3 self-limiting beliefs that stop us big time from change:

#This is not the right time for changing

This is the most frequent of the self-limiting beliefs. How often have you heard that? How often have you thought so? If you feel this way, I have a few questions for you:

  • Why not?
  • If now is not the right time, when is the right time?
  • Do you have 5 good reasons not to make the change you want, which is beneficial for you now?
  • If so, why are you aiming at this change at all?

Suppose you have dreamt about something for a while. If you want it – do it now. Now is the right time. Tomorrow will bring other priorities, dreams, changes. Tomorrow is often the week’s busiest day – this is a Spanish proverb but strikes a universal chord.

#I need to know tons about change

You don’t really have to know everything about changes to venture yourself. You need to define what you want, but you can learn the rest pretty fast, and it is not difficult. The thing is that there is a lot of literature and opinions about change that you don’t need, as not everything applies to you, to your circumstances and the change you want.

All you need is the “I want to change attitude”. Having this attitude and defining your goal sets you up for the rest in a change journey.

#I don’t have the time or the money to change what I want

That might be true, and I’ll give you that. But you can do something about it – you can plan, find sponsorship, partner up, ask for help. Many things are possible when you have a plan, don’t give in to this self-limiting belief.

Let’s scratch these 3 self-imposed limits entirely. Now, think again about the change you want to make. Whether it is a professional or personal change – it doesn’t matter. Whether it is complex or small – it doesn’t matter. Just assume that now is the right time. You know enough to get started and find the necessary support and resources to get it done. I promise you, this way of thinking is the way forward. It shapes an entirely different attitude to change, one of openness and progress.

This attitude, the ‘I want to change attitude,’ sets you up for success. Your next steps in a change journey become merely practical. You need to define your goal, plan your actions, convince your stakeholders and execute your transformation.
